The classes are perfect for those working full-time and wanting to gain practical knowledge on how to draft patterns and construct garments.

COURSE OUTLINE
Our Patternmaking & Garment Construction course comprises 16 sessions, each lasting two hours. These sessions are scheduled for every Tuesday and Thursday from 17:30-19:30 and will be conducted in-person at our campus located in the Old Biscuit Mill. The course begins with an introduction to patternmaking and its principles, followed by an in-depth exploration of garment construction techniques.
Throughout the course, you will be given a variety of engaging tasks and assignments to help you develop your skills and deepen your understanding of the subject matter. In addition, you will have access to course notes, resources, and lectures, as well as personalized guidance and support from our facilitator.
To ensure that you have ample opportunity to ask questions and receive extra assistance as needed, we will also provide you with access to a dedicated WhatsApp group and contact details for our team. By the end of this course, you will have gained the knowledge and practical experience necessary to create your own garments with confidence and skill.
YOUR COURSE CONVENER
Shaun Smith has been teaching and inspiring our patternmaking and garment construction short course students for the past five years and is currently studying towards his Masters Degree in Fashion. He has mastered the art of Pattern Making and is currently exploring the practical testing of unconventional pattern making. “Each garment we create possesses a certain energy, which allows the wearer to be transcended into a desired feeling”
COURSE OUTCOMES
At the end of this course you will receive a certificate of completion and be able to :
- Understand the principles of design, pattern making and garment construction.
- Understand complex garment construction and be able to use presses, fusing and how to handle different fabrics and prep them before sewing.
- Be able to draught and sew up a fly zip and pockets on a pair of denim pants.
- Basic corsetry that is needed for bridal and formal dresses.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Required stationery and supplies to complete the course:
Pencil, Sharpener, Black marker / fine liner, Paper Scissors, Pritt, Eraser, L Square, Meter ruler, French curves, tracing wheel, Cotton thread, Fabric scissors, Pins, Tape Measure, Fabric marker/ tailor’s chalk. A selection of fabric and trim (to be decided upon choice of design)
Domestic sewing machine & Domestic Overlocker (optional)

TERMS OF ACCEPTANCE
Any student who registers for a Short Course is liable for the entire course fee, irrespective of whether the student completes the course or not.
The payment of the registration fee in the amount of R2200 will secure your spot in the class.
The registration fee is non-refundable.
The payment of course fees (R6500) must be paid before the short course starts.
The short courses are not credit bearing and are not registered with the South African Qualifications Authority but it does create a solid base for anyone wanting to pursue studies in fashion.
On completion, students will receive a certificate of completion.
Short course students will receive their certificate of completion on condition that they attend all classes, submit all relevant class work and pass all assessments
The person responsible for payment of fees shall be held liable to DAF for the cost of repairing any damage to its property caused by the student.
