The DAF students were treated to a talk by Barney Maharaj from Woolworths. Barney has 36 years of experience in the Textile Industry, so it is safe to say that, he is somewhat of an expert.

Inline with Fashion Revolution Week, Barney spoke the students though important issues faced in the Textile Industry and helped to unpack terms like “Sustainability“, “Eco friendly” and “Ethical Sourcing“. He also introduced our students to new terms like Recycled Polyester, GOTS standard and BCI ( Better Cotton Initiative) and very interestingly Woolworths are using this type sustainable of cotton for a large part of their fabric orders, continuing to be champions in sustainability in the South African market.

Barney most profoundly raised awareness to the issues the environment faces as a direct impact of the Textile Industry. This sharing of knowledge is imperative for our future DAF fashion designers; to help them make educated decisions about how their craft will impact on future generations. This is very much inline with the “Fashion Revolution” weeks belief and the slogans on the Institutions walls “Do Something, Be Curious & Find out”.
