As the DAF Academic Head and faculty team leader, Dr. Safia Salaam believes meaningful education is what it is all about. To see students develop their voice as creatives and communicate this through fashion; whether this is through designing, clothing production, styling or any path
which suits the individual, gives Dr Salaam a sense of success.
With a PhD from UCT, Dr. Salaam is a renowned
practitioner and educator in the creative arts. Her
field of interest lies in a multimodal approach to
learning, teaching and assessment with an
interrogation into pedagogical practices within
applied design curriculums.
With almost two decades with DAF, Nikki oversees the curriculum to ensure our high standards of excellence.
With the experience of teaching almost every subject at DAF, Nikki promotes the continuity between the creative and conceptual subjects and the technical and practical subjects.
Nikki received her BTech in Fashion from CPUT and continues to gain the first-hand experience through freelancing for a major South African fashion retailer. Nikki’s experience ensures our curriculum remains relevant and of an industry standard.
Having worked in the studios of three of South Africa’s top fashion designers, Rene is a master in the technical art of garment construction and patternmaking.
In 2007, Rene began her teaching career at DAF and received her BTech degree in 2011.
Rene brings a patient and thorough approach to her teaching style. With the often hard to grasp technical and practical subjects.
Liandra Van Staaden
Fashion Design, illustration & cad
With a BTech Degree in Textile Design & Technology, Liandra is currently completing her Post Graduate studies in Sustainable Development.
As an engaged advocate and activist for a better more equitable industry, she strongly believes that designers need to find innovative solutions for complex real-world problems.
Liandra has worked as a designer for MR Price and has been a part of the Fashion Revolution SA team for several years.
DAF graduate, Natheal won the coveted Design Excellence Award which is presented by a panel of industry specialists. The technical execution of his final range impressed the judges.
Natheal started sewing garments for clients in his first year at DAF and continues to freelance as a pattern maker and grader.
His technical skills and upbeat personality have made Natheal a wonderful addition to the DAF family

Passionate about the culture of life-long learning, Bianca Fobian has been at the helm of Design Academy of Fashion since 2006 as Managing Director.
She is a firm believer of self-actualized, future-focused students and, to this end, has created a curriculum and an environment that is conducive to self-development, holistic growth and fostering creativity.
With 18 years of experience heading up Trend Forecasting and Fashion Design for major South African fashion retailers, Luke is most excited about building an innovative education platform that contributes to the future of African design.
With a desire to build a world-class platform for the next generation of talent, he is set on bridging the gap between students and the workforce
