Short Courses

Whether it’s to gain a basic understanding, or gain an introduction into a specialised area of the fashion industry, there are many reasons to enrol in a Short Course at Design Academy of Fashion.
It could also be the first step in your understanding of DAF’s culture, to help you find the right course to continue with, or simply a way to spend an educational holiday in the beautiful city of Cape Town.
Short courses are open to anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of fashion in one of the most important spaces in the industry.

FASHION DESIGN

The Fashion Design course will provide a basic overview of fashion illustration and design from the beginning of the design process, conceptualisation to effective visual communication of your designs.

The course will begin with concept generation, made visual in an inspiring visual diary and progress into the demonstration of sketching techniques and the development of a fashion figure that captures your unique signature. Students will mix tints and shades of colour, use tone to create 3-dimensionality in drawing; create effective compositions and learn about the associated meanings of each colour.

At the end of the course students will learn and demonstrate an understanding of the principals and elements of design in relation to fashion design, drawing/illustration and effective layout.

FASHION STYLING

This immersive course combines the theory of fashion styling with practical, real life exercises that will give you the confidence to pursue styling as a career option, freelance undertaking or extension of your fashion design studies. It will give you an understanding of the job of a fashion stylist and provide helpful tips and guidelines for finding and producing styling work. 

We will explore the various areas that styling is used in in the fashion industry and associated industries such as photography and the film industry. If you want a stronger foundation for becoming a stylist in South Africa; inspiring, interactive projects that take you out into the public to explore and develop your eye as a designer then this is the course for you. We will build your portfolio consisting of lookbook shoots, street reports and trend reports.

PATTERN MAKING & GARMENT CONSTRUCTION (PART 1)

The patterns and garments course will provide you with a foundation for understanding the principles of patternmaking and garment construction. In the garment construction class, practical exercises will demonstrate the translation of patterns into garments including samples of various construction details and you will be able to create a basic garment of your own design. At the end of this short course we will cover skirts and basic tops.

PATTERN MAKING & GARMENT CONSTRUCTION (PART 2)

The Patterns and Garments Part 2 course will add to the foundation laid down in Pattern Making and Garment Construction Part 1, fleshing out your basic knowledge while bringing in your input into the design, patterning and construction process. You will be guided through the process of adapting a found image/ combination of images into your preferred design, adapting the basic block for your client or your own measurements and translating that design into a working and then final pattern. 

Participants will then undergo the exciting process of cutting and sewing up their personal design. The course culminates with a fitting session, where garments are tested for fit and finish. If you want to sew garments up for yourself or a client with ease, this is the course for you! At the end of this short course we will cover simple dress styles, basic pants and loose over-garments.

COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN (CAD)

This short course is for beginners and will cover the basics of Photoshop and Illustrator. Learners will be guided through tutorials covering how to make mood boards, collages as well as a fashion figure.

MENSWEAR

This immersive short course will focus on soft tailoring for menswear. We will enable you to create a pattern block archive, through pattern drafting, transforming flat pattern blocks and creating 3D garments during construction. By the end of the course you will have gained a thorough understanding of men’s body measurements, pattern balancing (both flat pattern and in garment form) and the ability to identify all elements (pieces & panels) needed for a complete garment.

This course will provide you with skills and knowledge in understanding the construction of men’s garments.

ADVANCED TECHNICAL DRAWING

This short course is aimed specifically at Designers working in the Fashion Industry and will require learners to have previous experience using Illustrator and Photoshop.

Learners will be guided through tutorials in order for them to learn how to most efficiently render industry standard technical drawings to be used in presentations as well as for suppliers. The course will cover Illustrator – including nodes, creating outlines, curves and shapes and how to create different stitches, frills, patterns and textures. Photoshop will also be introduced and the editing of images using cloning, colour changes etc. will be covered.
